Discovery

We read the ground before the solution.

Discovery sets the automation idea aside and starts with the real ground of the work: where work is born, who owns it, where information sits, where decisions wait and where control may disappear.

Discovery is not a demo call.

This page documents how WhiteGate reads the operation before designing automation.

What is Discovery?

Discovery is an operating read used to understand whether the work is ready for automation.

No ready product is presented. The process is read from traces: mail, files, tables, pending approvals, manual checks and exception paths.

The goal is not to produce a quick answer; it is to create enough clarity to avoid automating the wrong place.

Discovery decision flow

What do we inspect?

Discovery does not collect ideas; it catches recurring operational traces. Each trace creates a design decision.

01

Repeated workload

Which work is carried by hand every week?

02

Scattered knowledge

Where does knowledge live: email, spreadsheets, chat or people?

03

Waiting decisions

Which step waits for whose approval?

04

Exceptions

How does the team recover when the normal flow breaks?

05

Control need

Which actions require approval, human judgment or audit trail?

Separating work that requires control

What is it not?

Product demo: a prepared screen is shown, real work stays hidden.
Intro meeting: intent is understood, but the operation is not read.
Requirement list: symptoms are collected, not the point of breakage.
AI brainstorming: possibilities appear, responsibility and control do not.
Packaged sale: the process is bent to the product, not the system to the work.
Discovery hardens reality before solution begins.Automation does not start before scope is clear.

Discovery outputs

The stage ends with decision-ready operating outputs, not ideas collected in a conversation.

Discovery Brief

Current state, opportunity areas and first recommended direction.

Workflow Inventory

Repeated, broken or manually carried work steps.

Source Map

Where knowledge lives: mail, spreadsheets, folders, ERP, CRM and people.

Risk Notes

Points that require error handling, approval, exception or audit.

Automation Readiness

Which process is ready and which must be cleaned first.

Decision criteria

Discovery ends with feasibility, not appetite. WhiteGate does not force automation where control cannot be built.

01

Can start

The process is clear enough, data is reachable and control points can be built.

02

Simplify first

The process fits automation, but data, ownership or decision structure is scattered.

03

Should not start

Automation would create more complexity than value at this stage.

Automation before this clarity is only chaos running faster.

Deep Dive

Discovery shows direction. Deep Dive enters the selected process and opens data structure, decision rules, exception paths, integration needs and control points.
